Computer Security Day 30th November
Nov 25, 2009
It’s Computer Security Day on 30th November, an annual event to help raise awareness of computer related security issues. The theme for this year is “Managing Risk”.
Computer Security Day was started in 1988 to highlight the importance of protecting computers and safeguarding confidential information. The event is observed worldwide, and is an ideal opportunity to review the security of your current arrangements. Whilst protecting workplace networks is usually the responsibility of IT professionals, individual users can help ensure they limit the risk of security breaches with a few simple measures:
- Always choose a strong password, using a mix of several words, letters, numbers and punctuation.
- Dispose of all confidential documents securely, and consider using an on-site shredding service.
- Don’t forget to destroy confidential documents that are stored electronically, such as CDs, DVDs and floppy disks.
- Remember to scan floppy disks for viruses before transferring their contents to your computer.
- When on the move use a Secure Flash Drive, with hardware-based encryption and an enforced complex password.
The Information Commissioners Office recommends everyone implements
data security measures, so why not make Computer Security Day the day you re-assess your security arrangements?
